How to Ask for (and Get) a Pay Raise

How to Ask for (and Get) a Pay RaiseHow to Ask for (and Get) a Pay RaiseYou are long overdue for a raise, and your boss doesnt seem to be doing anything about giving you one. Even if youknow you deserve a higzu sich salary, you, like many people, may be hesitant to ask for a raise. You have three options. You can do nothing, but then you may stay at the same salary indefinitely. You can look for a job that pays more, or you can ask for a raise. Clearly, sitting around and waiting for your boss to make the first move hasnt worked so far, and looking for another job can be a big hassle. What are you waiting for? Heres how to ask for a raise. What Are Others in Your Field Earning Before approaching your boss, you need to do some research. Its time to learn about typical salaries in your field so that you can then figure out if you are earning less than you should. You can try talking to colleagues in your field. Be forewarned, however, that many people are reluctant to discuss mone y. You can also get salary information from published resources. Websites like O*Net Onlinepublish median salaries for a variety of occupations based on government data. You can even find salary information by state. If you belong to a professional association, check to see if it has salary information available. Begin by looking at the organizations website. Glassdoor.com is also an excellent resource for salary information. Figure Out How Much You Can Earn Remember that because of factors like education and experience, your salary may differ quite a bit from the median published salary for your field. You must be realistic when thinking about your expectations. Consider the number of years youve been working in the field, your education and credentials, and the length of time youve worked for your current employer. You should even take the location of your job into account. Jobs in major cities, for instance, usually pay more than ones in small towns. Evaluate the Financial Health of Your Employer Be very cautious about your timing. Dont ask for a raise if you know your employer is having financial problems or if there is a lot of uncertainty in the industry. While, as an employee, you are probably well aware of your companys financial health, you shouldnt rely only on what you observe. Do some company research, which includes looking at financial reports and following business news. Prepare Your Case Once you are sure the timing is right and you have all the relevant information, get ready to meet with your boss. Start preparing to make a case for your raise. Even though you think you deserve one, that might not be as obvious to your boss. Its up to you to convince him. Sell yourself just as you would if you were trying to get a prospective employer to hire you. First, make a list of all your accomplishments. Start with the most recent ones and work your way backward. Describe how those accomplishments benefited your employer. Be very specific. F or example, dont just say you increased profits. Prepare to tell your boss how much they rose and what role you played in making that happen. Next, make a list of your relevant skills - what makes you successful at work. Include your hard and soft skills. Finally, get ready to describe all the things you plan to do for the organization in the future. Remember to give details What If You Get Turned Down or Dont Get the Salary Increase You Want Before you walk into your bosss office to ask for a raise, think about what you will do if she says no or agrees to give you one that is much smaller than what you want. Will you quit your job or will you wait a while and then ask for a raise at a later date? Your answer may depend on what your boss says. For example, has she turned you down because of your performance or because of other circumstances? Set Up an Appointment Now that youve done all the preparation, its finally time to speak to your boss. It is not something you should discuss with him in passing - its serious business. Treat it as if it were a meeting with a client or a job interview. Set up an appointment to discuss your request. Dont ask for a raise by email, at the water cooler, or by telephone. The only reason for not having this conversation face-to-face is if you and your boss dont work at the same location. Present Your Case Your boss may agree to give you a raise immediately. Wouldnt that be nice? You may have to do nothing more than askher for one, which may leave you wondering why she didnt offer before you asked. It is more likely you will have to present the material you gathered. Stay calm and stick to the facts. Getting emotional will not benefit you, and may even harm your negotiations. Dont bring up your personal expenses because they are not your bosss problem. In your employers eyes, your salary has everything to do with how you benefit the employer and nothing to do with your needs. Respond to a No Your boss may turn you down. What should you do next? It all depends on the reasons he gives you. If he says he is rejecting your request because of your performance, you have to decide if hisfeedbackis valid. If it is, think about what changes you can make to turn things around. If you conclude that your boss is just making excuses and his criticism of your performance isnt valid, you may want to go where you will be appreciated. Find out if there is any chance the situation will change. If you learn that is a possibility, get your boss to commit to a time to revisit your request. For example, you might want to have another conversation during your next ?performance review. Ask your boss to help you come up with a plan for what you will need to do to improve your chances of getting a raise by that time.??

C-Suite Talk With Gurjot Sidhu

C-Suite Talk With Gurjot SidhuC-Suite Talk With Gurjot SidhuGurjot New Yorks CEO and Creative Director talks to Ladders about her line of luxury womens business wear and her passion to see women excel in the workplace. What prompted you to start Gurjot New York? Our mission is to advance women in the workplace by dressing them impeccably. Back in 2009 when I was thinking about starting a business, the idea of creating the power suit for women really stuck with me. Id had a great career in management consulting and always struggled with finding the right suit fit and look. Also, I had sewn my whole life, so I felt it would be amazing to raise my personal interest in sewing to a professional level and really have an impact on the lives of women professionals. I went to FIT for a year to learn the industry and make contacts, and in July of 2010 I launched my Custom Collection, followed by a ready-to-wear collection. One of yur goals is to help professional women succeed and excel in the w orkplace. How does clothing play a role in this success?Clothing plays two roles in the corporate world It affects how people think of you, and it impacts how you feel about yourself. We try to have maximum impact on both fronts for our clients. In terms of impressions, we want others to look at our clients and think, wow, she has it together. For our client, we know when her clothes are made from luxurious materials and fit her perfectly, she is going to feel like a million bucks. And when you feel that way, you can accomplish anything.During KPMGs KNOW Fashion Event, What Suits You?, you mentioned that women need to create a legacy of helping their protgs dress the part for management. Can you elaborate on this concept? In working with my tailors in New York, Ive noticed that men have a natural legacy they can tap into where the boss takes his staff to his own tailor and says, these guys are managing important clients for meplease clean them upthe first suit is on me. And instantl y these men are introduced to the world of tailored suiting and are informally guided by their tailors. Its a wonderful legacy that doesnt exist for corporate women. At Gurjot New York we are creating this legacy by having a panzerschrank place (our showroom) where women can come and ask all the questions they have about dressing, share all the challenges they have faced, and come away with clothing that makes them feel confident, polished, and able to achieve anything.Unfortunately, not all trends surfacing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week will be appropriate for the workplace. How can professionals incorporate some of these fashion trends into their professional wardrobes without damaging their professional brand? It is altogether possible to stay on-trend while still looking professional. The key is to know what style of dressing really represents your personal brand, and which pieces you can switch in and out. For example, in our collections the skirts, pants and jackets are staples that are meant to last forever. But each season we add on-trend colors with our silk shells and scarves. A great way for women to incorporate trends is through accessories and use of color. How far you can go with a trend really depends on the industry you are in. My clients in finance tend to stay neutral with their clothing but on-trend with their handbags. My clients in marketing can play a lot more with color and mixing pieces to match a particular trend.Whats the biggest challenge youve encountered while starting your own business?I had been an entrepreneur before (with my own consulting business), so I was comfortable with the idea of being on my own and slowly building something from nothing. I was excited about creating an actual product and selling it, but was new to the business of fashion. It was very different from the consulting world. In fashion few people take a new designer seriously, or really even give you the time of day from anyone you need to grow your business . I found I had to demonstrate credibility and be very tenacious about getting what I needed. The key was to not take no for an answer and just keep showing up. Im happy to say that today we have very strong supplier relationships.Youve reinvented yourself more than once, making the transition from high-powered executive to stay-at-home mom to entrepreneur and fashion designer. What advice would you give to someone who wants to transition to a new field?I focused on taking baby steps in the direction I wanted to go. I find there are always nay-sayers who question your abilities or qualifications, often because they cant imagine themselves making such a big change. Its also easy to get overwhelmed by the big picture of getting there. Its important to listen to your instinct and pursue your dreams, and be sure to celebrate small victories along the way. Use those touch points as evidence that you have made progress and that you will continue to do so. In the end youll find that the pe ople who questioned you all fall in line once you are thereso there is no reason to worry about their views to begin with. Thanks GurjotGurjot Sidhu is the CEO and Creative Director of Gurjot New York, the first clothing collection ever designed for business women, by a business woman. The Meaning of BOLO in Law Enforcement

The Meaning of BOLO in Law Enforcement The Meaning of BOLO in Law Enforcement When you hear a law enforcement officer talking about a BOLO, odds are that he doesnt mean a kind of whip or a southwestern-style tie. In law enforcement terms, BOLO is an acronym that stands for be on the lookout. BOLOs are issued to police officers based on specific criminal intelligence. They  include information on all sorts of illegal activities from reckless driving to robbery and even homicide.   BOLOs usually include details about a crime suspect such as estimated age, race, height, and weight. They might also give vehicle and clothing descriptions to officers when these things are known and are applicable.   Other Terms for BOLO Law enforcement officers are known for talking in codes and slang. In fact, it can sometimes seem like theyre speaking an  entirely different language. BOLO is one of those slang words that can bring about a bit of confusion. Its more accurately called an All Points Bulletin or an APB. These information bulletins are sent to police officers across all points of jurisdiction and sometimes into neighboring jurisdictions or even across the country. It depends on where a suspect was last seen and where he was believed to be headed.   Another term for BOLO is Attempt to Locate or  ATL. ATLs might also include information about criminal activity or suspects, but BOLOs are usually only called attempts to locate when officers are asked to check on someones welfare as opposed to being alerted  to a potential arrest situation. Amber Alerts are forms of BOLOs that are issued when a child is kidnapped or missing and is believed to be in danger. When Are BOLOs Issued to Police Officers? Police dispatchers issue BOLOs when a crime has been committed and they have information that could lead to finding evidence or to an arrest. This information can come from the original 911 caller or from other officers as they arrive at the scene of a situation. BOLOs are also issued when theres concern for an individuals or a potential victims welfare or safety. This is particularly true if it looks like it might be a missing person case. A BOLO might also be issued when a disabled adult or elderly person has gone missing, such as when an individual suffering from dementia has wandered off.     What Does an Officer Do When He Gets a BOLO? Law enforcement officers keep their  eyes  out for the person, suspect, or vehicle cited in the BOLO when they receive such an alert. Depending on the nature of the BOLO - especially if  someone  is in danger or if the police are looking for a  particularly  dangerous suspect - they might passively or very actively look for the person. When they locate the person identified in the BOLO, police officers can hold him  temporarily  to find out  whether he is, in fact, the suspect in the bulletin. If the BOLO is criminal in nature and when officers can confirm that the individual is indeed the suspect, they will most likely arrest him. Officers will simply make sure the person is safe when a welfare-check BOLO is issued, such as by escorting him home again.

How to Impress Your Boss at a New Job -The Muse

How to Impress Your Boss at a New Job -The Muse How to Impress Your Boss at a New Job Hi Kyle, I'm new at work (a first-year candidate attorney), just two weeks in. I want to impress my bosses and the senior people, but things are slow, and work hasn’t been allocated to me yet. I keep begging for things to take on and knocking on different office doors, but I've been told there's nothing, and things are just quiet this month. I'm getting a little restless as I know it's always good to show your managers that they made the right decision in hiring you. How do I make a great impression when things are so slow at the office and I literally don’t have anything to work on? Signed, Longing to Make an Impression Hi Longing to Make an Impression, Thanks for writing! There’s so much you can do to stand out as a new hire, plus some great ways to be productive in this spare time. If I had to narrow it down to three tips, here’s what I’d suggest doing to both impress your boss and get ahead. 1. Meet People You Wouldn’t Normally Meet Getting to know co-workers outside of your core team will help you understand your organization and its culture more clearly. Ask someone out for coffee or literally go around the office introducing yourself to colleagues you haven’t officially met. Be respectful of others’ time, but be friendly and make a point to learn names. As you get to know people, you’ll not only gain knowledge and insight about the firm, but you’ll also make progress in building your personal network. I’m a huge proponent of networking- and a big believer that internal networking is just as important as any out-of-office events. 2. Become an Expert on Company Processes It can be tough to get up to speed when you’re the new person, so you should be looking at this slow period as bonus time. The absence of real work means you have time to learn systems, get your inbox in order, and prepare for what’s surely to come. Now’s the perfect opportunity to soak up company processes and protocol. As a first-year attorney, see if there’s research and reading you can do to better position yourself for when the first assignment lands on your desk. 3. Find a Useful Project and Try to Lead its Execution One of the most direct ways that you can demonstrate ambition is by using what you’ve learned from the above tips to start an initiative that will improve an area that could use streamlining. In some roles, this will mean writing a proposal and seeking approval; in others, it might mean building a new report on your own. Can you, in your position, take a deep dive into past work the firm’s focused on? Keep in mind that any project or initiative you choose should be one that you can set aside and return to at a later point for when the day arrives- and it will!- when you’re suddenly up to your ears in work. This is an opportune period to focus on things that you’re normally too busy for, but remember that these tips are just a start. It can feel awkward in a new role when you're learning the ropes and trying to make your mark, but know that this is, indeed, a common conundrum. Do your best not to overthink it: You were hired for a reason, and sooner or later you’ll get your opportunity to show everyone what an asset you are to the team. Audiologist Interview Questions and How to Answer Them Audiologist Interview Questions and How to Answer Them Interviewing for an audiologist job? Types of Audiologist Interview Questions Audiologist interviews may include a number of question types. Some of these questions will be behavioral. Behavioral interview questions ask you to explain how you dealt with past experiences on the job. You might also be asked situational interview questions. This might include various types of medical knowledge, as well as computer skills needed to administer hearing tests. Social Media When Youre Job Hunting

Social Media When You’re Job Hunting Social Media When You’re Job Hunting Social media  sites allow you to connect with potential employers, find job openings, and get advice en masse from your friends. On the flip side, committing  social media sins can utterly ruin your career prospects. Especially with some ATS integrating social profiles found connected through a single email address. So post with discretion, especially if you use your professional email for everything. Here’s how to use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and sites like them to your advantage during a job search - and how to avoid letting your online persona interfere with your success. Facebook A recent study showed that nearly 40% of employers use social media sites like Facebook to screen potential employees, and that number is likely to keep growing. You’ve probably read enough articles on the do’s and don’ts of Facebook posting to know the basics. Do refrain from daily gym selfies; don’t post that angry political rant. It’s simple, really. Don’t put off potential employers by posting questionable content. Or, be sure that your privacy settings don’t broadcast your updates to those outside your friends list. If you do add potential employers and colleagues, use groups to keep professional contacts separate from family and friends or mark your posts so they’ll only be visible for close friends and family. Twitter Use Twitter to enhance your job search by following companies you’d love to work for and people you want to emulate in your career. Also be sure to keep your own feed fresh by re-tweeting career-related content or sharing relevant articles often. If you frequently post NSFW (not suitable for work) content on your Twitter feed, consider keeping a separate account for professional use only. Sites like Twitter and Facebook are great places to let people know you’re on the hunt for a new job, and sometimes the best leads come from pre-existing contacts. Still, keep in mind that even if a friend promises to put in the proverbial good word for you, chances are you’ll likely still be asked to submit a resume online. This means that you’ll be subjected to the dreaded automated resume-sorting software. Securing a hot lead on a killer position is only the first step, you’ll still have to nail the resume in order to get an actual interview. LinkedIn LinkedIn has become a go-to social media site for many talent-seeking recruiters, and can be a great tool for the job hunter. When you’re eyeing a position, check out the company’s LinkedIn page. Take a look at the profiles of existing employees and find common denominators. Take note of skills, accomplishments, and even personality traits that seem to be shared by the majority. Make sure to play up these kinds of accomplishments and qualities on your own resume when submitting it. Be careful, however, about making yourself sound unprofessional. Additionally, LinkedIn Groups are a great way to connect to similar jobs seekers, industry leaders and potential hires. There’s a wide variety of groups based on profession or interests, but if you’re job hunting, the Premium Job Seeker’s Group is a popular choice. Snapchat Snapchat? For job-searching? Totally! The app boasts 100 million users, and they’re not all teenagers swapping selfies. Statistics show that 39% of Snapchat users are in the 25-44 demographic. Snapchatters are more engaged than users of any other social media platform, sharing 700 million snaps every day. You can use Snapchat to get a better glimpse into a company’s culture. Watch what companies you’re following do on Snapchat. For instance, what do they share and how do they keep attracting new followers? Use their snaps for inspiration in building your own brand - and for potential interview ammo. You can also post work-related or productive updates to your own Story and connect your Snapchat profile to your other online channels and boost your followers. Connected and relevant people are the type employers want to hire, especially if you’re going for a job in tech. Instagram Instagram provides another way to familiarize yourself with the players in your field, and with the companies you’re interesting in working for. Follow them, and if the content you post is relevant and interesting to their brand, you might get noticed - which would be a serious leg-up on the competition! Just remember to make sure you’re exceedingly careful about what you share. Even if you’re not posting anything illegal or risque, seemingly innocuous things like complaining about traffic or sharing a funny meme can be enough to turn off a hiring manager. Instagram also has great inspirational and motivational accounts. Beside, what better way to spend your downtime than perfecting new hobbies like yoga or cooking, show potential employees you have a well rounded life. Social media can enhance your job search, and put you on a potential employer’s radar. It can also wreak havoc on your professional reputation if you’re not careful. Use the Internet wisely and use expert resume optimization to help you stand out from the online crowd once your resume gets noticed.

Research Mental load weighs down working mothers

Research 'Mental load' weighs down working mothers Research 'Mental load' weighs down working mothers With kids all over the United States on winter break, the hands of working mothers everywhere are full as ever.As the  recently-released  Bright Horizons Modern Family Index shows this year, among working mothers, 72% think it’s their responsibility to keep their children’ schedules up to date, compared to 22% of fathers; 59% manage all home tasks, compared to 22% of men; and 63% have stayed home when their kids don’t feel well instead of coming to the office, compared to 29% of fathers. The report sheds light on the “mental load” working moms face, which requires them to take on a variety of roles.Kelton Global carried out the research, Bright Horizons Family Solutions  commissioned it, and it’s the fourth installment of a yearly series.  The research team surveyed 2,082 working 18+ Americans who are parents to one or more kids younger than 18.Here’s what working women take onCiting 2013 evidence from Pew Research Center, the report said that in 40% of American homes, w omen are the “breadwinners.”  It said that 86% of employed mothers report being in charge of most things involving their families and homes, including transportation to appointments and scheduling them.Among women who provide the main source of income for their families, they are “34% more likely than other working mothers to manage the family finances (71% vs. 53%).”Fifty-two percent of employed mothers say they’re “burning out” because of how much they have to do at home, and 69% of them say that “household responsibilities” are behind this mental load.“The mind share versus time share equation is at the heart of the mental load - the requirement on women to be not just parents and caretakers, but also unofficial keepers of where the entire family needs to be and when, and perpetual guardians against anything falling through the cracks,” the report says. That’s why employers should promote equality - offer something for everyone - according to the report. “Upending the order will require changing expectations. To allow women’s and men’s careers to flourish, employers will need to offer family-friendly benefits that appeal to both genders. Perhaps more importantly, they will need to ensure employees have equitable, gender-blind access to support,” the report says. “The goal is to change workplace cultures that quietly favor men as employees and women as mothers, and so to create environments and cultures in which mothers and fathers feel they can equally share the load.”Here’s what working dads doThe report said that fathers who are breadwinners are “more than three times less likely to stay on top of the family’s schedules,” maybe because they’re not supported at work when they try to manage household responsibilities, “leaving mothers with both the personal and professional heavy lifting.”Only 22% of male breadwinners sign up their kids for recreational activities at the end of the school day, versus 76% wh o bring home the main income. Just 23% of male breadwinners take care of the kids when they’re out of school or feeling under the weather, versus 49% of breadwinning women. While the 2016 Modern Family Index reportedly found that more than 25% of working fathers thought they might be let go from work after letting their workplace know they were having a child, this year’s research found that employed dads are “are 32% more likely than mothers to say they would give up a 10% raise for more family time.”Bright Horizons  CHRO Maribeth Bearfield commented on the research in a statement, showing what being more progressive can do.“Now is a more important time than ever to break out of traditional male/female stereotypes â€" both at home and at work,” she said. “The fact is that for most employers, much of their most valuable talent in the workplace is playing double duty as manager of family life as well. By providing supports to working women, they can help open up mindshar e that can contribute even more to the workplace. And by creating environments where men are encouraged and valued for taking advantage of work/life supports as well, workplaces can start to catch up with the culture this generation of working families demands.”More from Ladders:The best bosses see employees as humans 3 ways to work with someone who won’t respond to emails How to answer the ‘Tell me about yourself’ interview question

Why You Should Get News Anchor Tips From a Talent Coach

Why You Should Get News Anchor Tips From a Talent Coach Why You Should Get News Anchor Tips From a Talent Coach News anchor tips are often easier to accept when they come from an outsider. Thats why many stations and networks hire TV talent coaches from beyond the company walls to help turn news anchors and reporters into valuable TV personalities. Obeying their tips is vital to building a career in news. Expect a Candid Critique of Your Work When a TV news anchor or a TV news reporter sits down one-on-one with a TV talent coach, the conversation can be humbling. Some may leave the room in tears after hearing a brutally honest assessment of their on-camera skills. The reason its hard to listen to this evaluation is that it has nothing to do with whether the person is a good employee or a skilled gatherer of news. Its all about on-camera performance. A TV news director usually shies away from this type of discussion, because an anchor or reporter could get the wrong idea that shes about to be fired. The insecurities that would develop would hurt her on-camera confidence. Sometimes, a TV consultant might also take on the role of a talent coach, but a consultants expertise is usually in market research, focus group studies and TV sweeps tips instead of the details of talent coaching. While you could be subject to receiving news anchor tips at any time from a variety of people inside and outside your company, when you hear that a talent coach is coming, prepare yourself emotionally for the TV equivalent of a complete medical physical. You need to hear the talent doctors report, even if theres some pain involved. What Youll Hear From a TV Talent Coach You may receive some compliments on your work as an anchor or reporter when a TV talent coach meets with you. But the focus will be on making you a better on-camera performer, so the meeting will concentrate on changes youll need to make. Before you dismiss what this outsider says, consider that the advice may really be coming from your TV station managers, possibly even from the corporate office. Your bosses will be looking to see if you will follow the tips you get, which could help determine if you get to keep your job. The three major areas that a TV talent coach will likely bring up are your on-camera appearance, your vocal skills, and your perceived audience appeal. The coach has probably spent a great deal of time studying your work through a series of newscasts before you ever meet him. Physical Appearance What youre likely to hear about the way you look on TV is also the way that viewers see you. A talent coach may even have the results from focus groups to back up his opinions. Some advice may be mild, such as avoid wearing black. The reason could be because it doesnt look appealing to the stations anchor desk or studio lighting choices. If black doesnt look good with your skin color, such as making you look pale, you might ask if you can get more help from a wardrobe or image consultant. These people can suggest makeup, clothing or colors that will enhance your features. The network-level news anchors and reporters you admire most probably get similar advice. Thats why they always look so great. Remember that acceptable on-camera clothing in a trend-setting city like Miami might not work in a place like Salt Lake City. Women may be told to save their low-cut blouses for when they go out on the town and not to wear them behind the anchor desk. The same is true for dangling earrings and distracting hairstyles. If you have weight issues, youre likely to hear about them. You might be told to wear jackets to hide your flabby arms or to get a gym membership. The intent isnt to be cruel, but constructive. If youre on camera, every aspect of your appearance may be a topic of discussion. Vocal Delivery Most on-camera news people realize that looks are a part of their career. But the same is true of how you sound to your audience, just as if you worked in radio. In years past, TV newscasters sounded as though they were simply reading out loud from printed scripts. That was acceptable then, but not in contemporary broadcasting. Audiences clearly prefer newscasters who sound as though theyre speaking conversationally, even if there are scripts involved. Mastering that art takes practice and coaching. A talent coach can help you work on your inflection so that you dont sound stiff or sing-songy. In some cases, an anchor or reporter needs to lose a regional dialect, such as when a person from Mississippi gets a TV job in Minnesota. Another common vocal issue is improper pronunciation like saying sangin instead of singing. Many inexperienced anchors and reporters tend to talk too fast or too loud, without even knowing it. A good talent coach can fix these aural distractions to make vocal delivery more polished. Your Audience Appeal There is a component to good on-camera presence that has nothing to do with the mechanics of appearance or voice. Its the it factor the charisma that separates the superstars from those who are quickly forgotten when the newscast ends. You come across as a know-it-all, Viewers think youre arrogant or Stop trying to be funny are some ways a TV talent coach may address shortcomings in your mass appeal. Fixing these problems is much more difficult than changing your clothes or your speech patterns. Hopefully, these suggestions are based on market research. There needs to be some substance behind the talent coachs desire for you to change your on-air persona. But sometimes, an outsiders gut instinct is correct. A weatherpersons constant attempts to sound smart may indeed sound like a professors lecture. A sportscaster whos been told to inject some commentary into his or her segment could come across as smart-alecky, even mean-spirited. Instead of becoming defensive, explain to the talent coach why youre performing in this way. You two can work together to accomplish the goals that better connect you to the viewers. He or she may agree with your strategy, just not your tactics. Getting talent tips from an experienced TV talent coach is a great opportunity. Accept what you hear and develop an action plan based on the advice you get to make yourself a better broadcaster.

How to Answer Job Interview Questions About Mistakes

How to Answer Job Interview Questions About Mistakes How to Answer Job Interview Questions About Mistakes A common job interview subject is past work-related mistakes. One question the interviewer might ask about past mistakes is, “What have you learned from your mistakes? While the topic might make you uncomfortable, it’s important to know how to answer a job interview question about mistakes. The interviewer asks questions like this to learn how you handle challenges. He or she also asks this to  determine your weaknesses, and decide if you have what it takes to do the job well. When answering this question, you want to be honest, but you should also do your best to tell a positive story about how you became a better job candidate because of a mistake. Read below for more tips on how to answer this question, as well as sample answers you can tailor to your career experiences. How to Answer Job Interview Questions About Mistakes The best way to answer this question is to talk about a specific example of a time you made a mistake. Briefly explain what the mistake was, but don’t dwell on it. Quickly switch over to what you learned, or how you improved, after making that mistake. You might also explain the steps you took to make sure that mistake never happened again. When talking about what you learned, try to emphasize the skills or qualities you gained that are important for the job you’re interviewing for now. You might also explain that something you struggled with a long time ago has actually become one of your strengths. You want your example of a mistake to be honest. However, its a good idea not to  mention a mistake that would be critical  for success in the new position. For instance, give an example from your last position that isnt specifically related to the job requirements for the new position. Its also a good idea to mention something that is relatively minor. Avoid mentioning any mistakes that demonstrate a flaw in your character (for example, a time you got in trouble for fighting at work). Sometimes a good mistake to mention is a team mistake. You don’t want to place all the blame on your teammates, but you can say that you collectively made an error. How to Prepare for Questions About Mistakes You’ll probably get some sort of interview question about a past mistake or  failure, so it’s a good idea to go into each interview with an example of a mistake in mind. Before the interview, look over the job listing, and try to think of a mistake you have made in the past that is not too closely related to the requirements of the job. Be sure to also think carefully about the positive spin you’ll put on the mistake. What did you learn from your error and how will it make you an ideal candidate for this position? Examples of the Best Answers When I first became an assistant manager of a sales branch, I tried to take on everything myself, from the day-to-day operations of the branch to making all of the big sales calls. I quickly learned that the best managers know how to delegate effectively so that work is done efficiently. Since then, I have won numerous awards for my management skills, and I believe a lot of this has to do with my ability to delegate effectively.I’m the kind of person who tries to learn and grow from every mistake. Years ago, a team I was working on failed to land a sale, and we were told it had to do in part with our ineffective visuals. Over the next six months, I spent much of my free time learning how to use various software programs to create enticing visual presentations. Since then, I’ve been continuously praised for my visuals in meetings and sales pitches. One thing I have learned from past mistakes is when to ask for help. I have learned that it is far better to ask for clarification and solve an issue right away than to be unsure. I know that your company emphasizes teamwork and the need to be in constant communication with one another, and I think my ability to ask (and answer) questions of my peers would help me fit in very well with your company culture. More Job Interview Questions and Answers Review common interview questions, along with sample answers, that will help you prepare for questions your interviewer will ask you no matter what type of job you’re seeking. Not all interview questions will be about the mistakes you’ve made at past jobs, but there will be more interview questions about you, such as, “Are you easy to talk to?” or, “Tell me about something that’s not on your resume.” Your interviewer will expect you to have some questions for him or her to answer about the job, the company, or the culture. If you’re not good at coming up with questions on the fly, review questions for candidates to ask the interviewer.
